Reprogramming the Infant Gut to Fight Antimicrobial Resistance

Antimicrobial resistance in early life is a critical health challenge. A study published in Cell Reports Medicine demonstrates that early-life probiotic supplementation metabolically reprograms the infant gut microbiome to exclude antibiotic-resistant “superbugs” like ESBL-producing E. coli. Using SIRIUS for molecular formula annotation, molecular structure annotation, and compound class prediction, researchers mapped how beneficial bacteria flood the gut with organic acids to build a protective chemical barrier against lethal pathobionts.
